Black Tooth Brewing Co.

Written By: Sarah Reish

A trip to Sheridan would not be complete without checking out the headquarters for this brewery. With tap houses in both Casper and Cheyenne it is safe to say that our state loves Black Tooth Brewing Co. We stopped in and chatted with the amazing bar tenders and met the head brewer/master brewer Reece and set out on a tour. We met multiple people on the team and have to say, this group is both welcoming and fun to hang out with.

Special thanks to Juli of Libations in Cody, our sponsor for this content.

The history

I think it is always best to start with the history. There is passion behind this beer and the group of people both working at the brewery and within the community. It is very much a beer the community is proud to call their own. But don’t worry, they are sharing the love. Founded in 2010, the brewery took off and within five years they were expanding the facility for distribution. They currently distribute to Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. In 2020 the brewery saw more growth, despite Covid-19. In 2020 BTB headed to the Capital City of Cheyenne and opened their first tap room, which included their original brewing system as well. They went all in because in 2021 they opened another tap room, this time in Oil City, better known as Casper. This tap room included a smaller system allowing for small batches and R&D.

Fun fact: Sheridan Beer, brewed by Black Tooth Brewery, has been owned by the same family since pre-prohibition. It came back and stuck around for a while in the 1950’s. Then the BTB Co partnered with the family and with their permission are allowed to brew the original recipe. Known as the great American beer.

The facility

This brewery is quite large and located in an old mechanic’s garage (a large one) and features garage doors that open to the patio. The industrial vibes still have some western influence giving a warm and welcoming feeling to the space.

The brewery is expansive and features a number of types of specialty equipment that aide in the beer making process. For instance, they just installed 2 horizontal lager tanks to speed up the brewing process for their 307 Lager. The team has created a space that works both efficiently and to enhances their beer. Centrally located in the brewery is a giant 120 barrel system that takes 4 batches to fill. It is an exceptional brewery, if you ever get a chance to tour, take it!

The beer

A great benefit of going on a brewery tour is the tasting portion. We were able to try several, not all, of the beers and thoroughly enjoyed it. Here is goes…

Sheridan Beer - Mentioned earlier, this beer has an impressive history. It is a pale golden ale that I would call a classic American beer.

Ground Hop - This is an IPA that offers hints of a tropical vacation. Notes of pineapple and mango are the perfect balance for this IPA.

Copper Mule - This is a ginger lime cream ale and it is fantastic. It is a light beer that is perfect for summer and I think it would pair well with any barbecue.

Hot Streak - A good and classic IPA that offers balance. This beer is offered year round, while the three above are seasonal.

Impear’d Saison - Chardonnay barrel aged with an 8.5 ABV. This is both unique and delicious. While it is a beer, it does sit on the back of tongue like a chardonnay

Straight Happiness - This is a tart fruity lager that is a Cheyenne pilot series. Perfect for the coming spring and summer, the strawberry notes celebrate the coming season.

307 Lager - This is a light lager that has bread like qualities and a hint of lemon. It is a smooth beer that you want to keep on hand for any occasion. Also, it is labeled “The official Beer of Wyoming” which BTB trademarked.

Upcoming

So what can we look forward to? We asked Doug, the GM and shared that this year their 307 Lager will be in Yellowstone National Park! Be sure to grab some while you are there. As well, BTB will be offering a musical artist tour at all three locations. Savannah Chestnut will be starting her BTB tour in Cheyenne on the 7th, Casper the 8th, and Sheridan on the 9th. Be sure to hit up your local BTB brewery and tap room for other great events.

Hit the road!

It seems all roads in Wyoming will lead to Black Tooth Brewing Co. Which kind of rocks. Share your BTB adventures and tastings with us on social media. Tag us @LiveWYldMag and use #LiveWYld
