Medicine Bow National Forest - Sierra Madre
Written By: Sarah Reish
The Sierra Madre Range is the main range that is part of the Rocky Mountains. It is located in southern Wyoming. We took Battle Pass Scenic Byway to explore this part of Medicine Bow National Forest and the Sierra Madre Range. Follow the road south out of Encampment and it will take you directly to Medicine Bow National Forest.
Battle Pass Scenic Byway
This is a stunning and beautiful 57 mile drive through the Sierra Madre Range. Forest views and mountain ranges surround you along the way. It is open from Memorial Day through October. Fall is a stunning time to visit and drive this byway.
Overlooks and history
Along the route are pull offs and overlooks. We picnicked at one of the overlooks. The overlooks offer placards with information and history from the area, including the natives who first lived there to the mountain men who came in the 1830’s trapping beaver fur for hats. Finally the area was home to loggers or Tie Hacks who cut railroad ties for the Union Pacific Railroad from the 1880’s - the 1920’s.
Aspen Alley
Along the route is a road called Sage Creek Road. It is a dirt road that is partway encased in aspen tree. We were here in early spring so not all of the leaves had filled in. During the fall this area is bursting with colors and known for its picturesque scenery. The iconic white aspen tree trunks are bright against the green backdrop. Many people have carved their initials in the trunks. We encourage people to refrain from doing this. It is beautiful in this area and cannot wait to return.
Wilderness areas
The Sierra Madres of Medicine Bow National Forest has two wilderness areas designated by congress. These areas offer backcountry experience along with protecting the lands. Both areas were designated by congress in 1984.
Huston Park Wilderness
Approximately 30,588 acres are designated in the Huston Park Wilderness. Features range from bogs to forests with aspen, spruce -fir and pine. Elevations in this area exceed 10,000 feet. Included in the area is fishing, camping, trail. The Huston Park Wilderness Trail is 12 miles.
Encampment River Wilderness
10,124 acres are part of the Encampment River Wilderness. While smaller, it is equally as beautiful.
Battle Pass Continental Divide
Located on Battle Pass is the Continental Divide. Battle pass is named for a battle between the native Americans and fur trappers in 1841. I researched and could not find much information other than it was a famous battle. If you have more information let me know!
