Oil City Axe Company
Written By: Sarah Reish
We decided we needed a fun experience to round out the outdoors, food, and libations we had been enjoying while in Casper. We decided to try something completely new and we were set up with a recommendation and reservation from Jereca at the Casper Chamber to experience axe throwing at Oil City Axe Company. If you have never tried axe throwing you need to get to Casper and try it at Oil City Axe Company.
The history
Darbi, the owner, is amazing. She is super fun and has an infectious energy. You can tell immediately she loves what she does. I was able to speak with her and learn more about where the idea for Oil City Axe Company came from. She shared that it really stemmed from a need for fun activities and things to do that were family friendly. I feel this is especially true with winter weather. Having an indoor space that is focused on movement and activity is something everyone can embrace. Darbi also shared that they had been axe throwing while on vacation in Las Vegas, it was there that they realized this was something people would love. And… they were right, we love it!
The facility
The place is massive, but has great vibes and ambiance. Across the length of the facility were caged bays with large wood targets. Outside of the the bay is a marked safety area. Outside of the safety area are large tables surrounded by chairs. Groups can gather at the tables and hang out while taking turns throwing axes.
There’s more! Guests can sign up for the Rage Room. You know that urge to throw or break stuff? You can do that here! Behind the tables is a game area featuring giant Jenga, corn hole (bags), giant connect 4, and lounging areas. The space was meant for family (all ages) and friends looking to hang out and have some fun. Oh, and it’s BYOB.
The game
More than hitting a target, there is an organized point system to create competition with your friends and family. To better understand the game, think of a simplified version of darts, but on a larger scale. Every group is given a coach who gets them set up and comfortable throwing sharp objects. Our coach, Morgan, took us through the technique of throwing axes properly. He was engaging and ensured we understood safety as well as the game.
Steve’s family met us there to join in on the fun and the competition was on. We had two bays and took turns, two at a time, and proceeded to play a couple of rounds. Every single one of us had a blast!
How we did
Well, I stink, axe throwing is not in my arsenal of skills. First and foremost, I have zero hand-eye coordination. I was only able to stick the axe one time in the several games we played. I seemed to be the only person who struggled. Steve did way better, but the winner was DeAnna! Way to win it for the girls, DeAnna! After a few games Morgan brought out throwing stars, saw blades, and other fun sharp items we could throw. The game morphed into a throwing competition and the afternoon ended with tons of laughter.
Who would enjoy axe throwing?
People who like to have fun and those who want to try something new. We had a great time with the axe throwing experience and with our family. Bring your family or get your friends together, and head over to Oil City Axe Company and spend the day together. You won’t regret it.
