Wyoming Whiskey - A Look Inside
By: Sarah Reish
Have you ever been to Kirby, Wyoming? We had not; however, it is the home of Wyoming Whiskey and so Steve, Steph and I had to make the trip to go and check it out. The three of us headed out one morning and this small town is a must see place for road-trippers and day trip adventurers.
We started our morning off checking out Wyoming Whiskey’s tasting room. This is a separate building from the still, so watch for the signs.
This warm and cozy tasting room was welcoming on a cold day. After exploring the gift shop we headed to the back room to taste several bourbons and learned more about the founding of the still and the process of bringing American Bourbon to Wyoming.
Whiskey Bourbon Facts:
We also learned that while bourbon needs to age 3 years at lower altitudes, our dry climate and altitude require a minimum of 5 years of barrel aging to achieve the flavor the team at Wyoming Whiskey was looking for. It took a couple of batches for them to achieve their ideal flavor profile. If you haven’t tried it in a while - you need to!
According to Steph and Steve, the whiskey bourbon is smooth and it warmed their souls. The barrels are charred right before they are filled and this brings out the color and the smokey flavor to life. And yes, they do all of their own charring! It is a very cool set up when they fill their barrels.
While many local companies are proud to buy their products and ingredients from right here in Wyoming, Wyoming Whiskey took it one step further and purchase all of their ingredients directly from the source within the Big Horn Basin. This truly makes Wyoming Whiskey a purely Wyoming product that is local to the area.
Wyoming Whiskey is sold in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Be sure to check them out and show them some love on social media!
After our tasting we took a tour the still. It is closed for tours at this time, but we wanted to be able to give you a peak into our adventure, so check out the video Steve made, it is in the magazine, showing a part of our tour. You will have to head out there yourself to experience the entire tour of the still!
We have included a few of the many great Photos we took along the way but we suggest you get out there and take some of your own and meet Amanda yourself.
We were so inspired when we left Wyoming Whiskey and it’s wonderful people that we created a drink in WYld Western style, using their bourbon called The Gold Rush and have shared it with you. If you can’t get out to Kirby for a visit at least pick up a bottle of WW Small Batch and mix up a cocktail.
Cheers!
