Winter Camping / Fishhawk Trailhead
The wildfire dubbed the “Fishhawk Fire” that ignited Sept. 2nd 2019 burned 4,000 acres in the Shoshone National Forest about 41 miles west of Cody. According to a U.S. Forest Service release, the fire was located six miles south of U.S. Highway 14/16/20. The cause of the fire was unknown.
Dan Vastyan, Colten Wead, Tanner Skinner, Seth Todd, and Milo, the black lab decided to do some winter Tipi camping and check out the burn up at FishHawk Trailhead. Fishhawk Trailhead is one of the more popular trailheads in the North Fork of the Shoshone River corridor. Trails leading from this area can take you to the North Absaroka Wilderness and the Washakie Wilderness. It is open year-round but services are not provided after September.
For camping, dogs are allowed and there is a 16-day stay limit. Because of grizzly activity in this area, hard-sided camping units are strongly suggested.
“There was some challenging hiking, and super cold temps but the views and experience were well worth it!”
