Boating Fremont Canyon - Alcova Reservoir, Wyoming
Written By: Sarah Reish
Earlier in May, Ben and Sonya Gruner hosted our Casper ribbon cutting at their brewery, Gruner Brother’s Brewing. While we were visiting with them they invited us out to the Casper Boat Club for a boat ride through Fremont Canyon at Alcova Reservoir. This impromptu adventure was welcomed, and we had a blast enjoying the sunshine and stunning views.
Alcova Reservoir
Only 30 minutes from Casper, this recreation area is both gorgeous and full of activities. The views driving in are amazing. The area is 2,470 acres and includes 6 campgrounds and 8 boat docks. There is a marina available with food, a bar, and a lovely outdoor area with picnic tables and a stage for live music. Visitors can rent boats, kayaks, bikes, and stand up paddle boards. This is a fantastic area for adventure enthusiasts and families to enjoy Wyoming’s beautiful outdoor water front and rock formations. Located 4 miles from Pathfinder, this is an adventure packed location where exploring is a must.
The Adventure Begins
We were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a collaborative adventure with Gruner Brother’s Brewing and Live WYld. After arriving they showed us where we could park the camper, and we made our way to their boat and prepped to head out onto the water and through the canyon. The boat is large and rather than sit in the back that was shaded, Sonya and I took our place at the front of the boat and relaxed on the lounge mat. Of course, Ben and Sonya brought some beer from the brewery, so we cracked some open and set out on our boating adventure.
Fremont Canyon
Making our way across the open water toward the canyon, we soaked up the sun as Sonya and Ben shared more about the reservoir. Alcova reservoir originally had a town that was flooded when they first filled it. Recently, they lowered the water 40 - 50 feet and divers were able to explore the depths of the lake - we are trying to find out more about any discoveries the divers may have made. While chatting, I looked up and all of a sudden the canyon walls rose majestically in front of us like a gateway welcoming us to continue on through the canyon. Ben told us the depth of water through the canyon ranges from 150-250 feet. The walls on either side were beautiful and towered over us with trees, caves and plenty of fowl. This area is perfect for rock climbing and fishing. We came across some anglers as well as another group that was out exploring the beautiful scenery. After about 4-5 miles, the canyon narrows and you are unable to continue onward, this meant we had to turn around. We were able to view the canyon a second time on our return trip, and no matter the direction, it continued to render me speechless.
Boating
The weather was perfect, and we were able to continue our boat ride and explore the entire reservoir from the water, which was great. We saw beaches, the campgrounds, and both dams. There is also a small residential neighborhood with a community that lives on the Alcova waterfront area year round. Viewing the area from the boat was really neat because we usually explore larger areas from our vehicle or on a hike. It was a different perspective, and we enjoyed the change in scenery.
Cottonwood Creek Dinosaur Trail
The massive Fremont Canyon walls showcase geological history, but there is another area in Alcova that showcases some amazing history. Cottonwood Creek and the dinosaur trails. This area of Alcova shows the rich history Wyoming has with dinosaurs. Follow the trails and signage to learn about the dinosaurs that once roamed the area and see the fossils up close and personal. This is a great outdoor adventure for those looking to combine history and adventure. Bring your dinosaur loving kids and history loving adults. You won’t want to miss this during your trip to Alcova Reservoir.
Hit the Road!
We believe this area is a true gem that makes for a great day trip or weekend get-a-way. Bring your tent or campers and stay for a while. We want to thank Ben and Sonya for taking us out and playing tour guides. If you make it out that way, be sure to share your adventure on social media. Tag us @LiveWYldMag and be sure to use #LiveWYld
