Camping at Alcova Reservoir, Wyoming
Written By: Sarah Reish
We decided since we were already there, boating through Fremont Canyon, that we would go ahead and camp right there on the water! The day was gorgeous and being on the water was a blast. So, after bidding Ben and Sonya goodbye and thanking them for taking us out on the water, we went in search of a camping spot for the night.
Campgrounds at Alcova
There are six campgrounds on Alcova Reservoir. We explored only a couple. Most are right on the water, while others are only a short distance off the water front, meaning ten to twenty yards. The facilities include portable restrooms and there is a dump station and showers; however, the showers were closed while we were there.
Fremont Campground
We ended up choosing a spot at Fremont Campground. This will come as no surprise to any of our Wyoming readers, but we had a bit of a wind problem and searched for a location that was somewhat sheltered from the wind coming off of the water. The Fremont Campground has two to three rows of camping spots that have trees for privacy. Each spot had a table and fire ring. The facilities were clean and I would say they are better than most of the portable restrooms we have used. Our spot was perfect, we were the only campers in this campground so we walked through each to see which had the most protection from the wind.
Dinner
Most often we cook a fantastic meal while camping and will cook from scratch over open fire. This evening we were tired, so Steve and I chose to keep things simple as we had been traveling for just about a week. We heated up some water in the Jet Boil and ate a Spicy Southwest skillet from Mountain House. We threw it into a tortilla and made burritos. Quick and easy. This is new for us because I enjoy cooking, but I was glad I had packed these so we would have the option for a simple meal after a long day outdoors exploring.
Bon Fire
One of our favorite parts of camping is listening to music and relaxing near the fire. Steve got our fire going, and we played our camping playlist and talked about our adventures and all the places we have yet to explore. We also talked about the amazing people we have met since starting our Live WYld journey. It was a wonderful time dreaming about what is yet to come for us and our readers.
The Experience
We loved coming to Alcova Reservoir. We had a blast out on the boat, and we enjoyed the camping. It was quiet and relaxing, and the facilities were well kept. We watched the sun set and really enjoyed the experience. While we enjoy dispersed camping, the campground worked for us because it allowed us to enjoy the waterfront just a little bit longer. When we got up the next morning, the water was like glass, and we were able to enjoy our coffee while watching the sunrise.
The Details
Camping where we were was $10 and first come first served. Quiet hours are from 10 pm until 6 am.
